“Sheer Gratitude”

The cover of Archie and Me #127 sets up a wonderfully familiar Riverdale dilemma: Archie has shown up to school decked out in full cowboy gear — hat, boots, and a fringed jacket — much to Miss Grundy's exasperated dismay, as she declares she wants Mr. Weatherbee to witness his "ridiculous western outfit." The two-panel gag plays out beautifully, with a flustered Miss Grundy marching Archie straight to the principal's office, only to find that Mr. Weatherbee has beaten them both to the punch with his own cowboy ensemble. Stan Goldberg's cover art captures the comedic timing perfectly, making this 1981 issue a charming snapshot of Archie humor at its most playful.
