“Payola”

In "Payola," Archie takes the mic as the school's P.A. DJ, spinning tunes from fellow students—only to find his playlist increasingly influenced by the favors he’s being offered. As his friends start bribing him for airtime, Archie’s "no pay, no play" rule puts his integrity to the test. With Harry Lucey’s expressive art and Terry Szenics handling both inks and letters, this 1960 issue captures a classic Archie dilemma with humor and heart. Cover by Harry Lucey and Terry Szenics.

Archie becomes the DJ on the school P.A. system, picking songs written and recorded by students. To get their records on his show, Archie's friends start offering him bribes, and pretty soon his policy becomes "no pay, no play." It's up to Archie's dad to give him the payment he deserves for his corruption.
