Archie #600 is the issue that finally forced a answer to the question that had defined the title since 1941: Betty or Veronica? The story originated when writer Michael Uslan — best known as the originator and executive producer of the modern Batman film franchise — pitched the marriage concept directly to editor-in-chief Victor Gorelick, who initially resisted before agreeing to develop it together. Uslan has described Gorelick's first response as flat disbelief, recounting that the editor said 'You can't do that' before conceding he couldn't articulate a reason why not. Archie Comics announced the storyline in May 2009, billing it as 'The Archie Story of the Century,' and the issue went on sale August 19, 2009, with pencils by longtime Archie artist Stan Goldberg, inks by Bob Smith, letters by Jack Morelli, colors by Glenn Whitmore, and editing overseen by both Gorelick and managing editor Mike Pellerito.
