Arak / Son of Thunder #46
In "The Road to Valhalla," Arak recalls a fateful clash with a rival clan that ended with his death and a journey to the afterlife. There, he faces Thor himself, challenging the god’s claim to thunder while navigating divine trials and Loki’s subtle interference. Written by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, and R. J. M. Lofficier, with interior art by Tony DeZuniga and colors by Adrienne Roy, this 1985 issue blends myth and adventure in a vivid, character-driven tale. The cover, also by Tony DeZuniga, captures Arak’s moment of trial with striking intensity.

Arak recalls an adventure he had when still with the vikings. He and his men had claimed a whale carcass when a rival clan attacked them. Arak fell in the battle and was taken to Valhalla by a valkyrie. When he arrives, Thor approaches to meet one of his nominal worshipers, but Arak declares that He-No is the rightful God of Thunder, prompting a battle with the god (with a little prodding from Loki, that is). Arak proves his mettle, and divine heritage, by lifting the hammer, Mjollnir, and Thor offers to return the viking to the land of the living. Arak agrees and leaves on good terms.
