Arak #8
This eighth volume in Arédit-Artima's French-language Arak series collects issues from the 1980s DC Comics run featuring the Native American warrior Arak, Son of Thunder. The stories, set in a fantastical version of medieval Europe, follow Arak's adventures as he wields his mystical thunderbolt and battles both historical and supernatural foes. This edition continues the character's journey through sword-and-sorcery landscapes, originally written by Roy Thomas and drawn by artists like Ernie Colón and Tony DeZúñiga.
"Prologue" kicks off Arak #8 with a thunderous splash: the voyagers arrive in China, only to face a real dragon erupting from the sea. As Arak battles the beast, he’s saved by Haakon—the Byzantine ambassador and an old acquaintance whose diplomatic overreach quickly sparks tension. When a mysterious armed woman later demands to meet Arak, the "dragon-slayer," the stage is set for something far greater than a single monster hunt. Written by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, Jean-Marc Lofficier, and Randy Lofficier, with bold artwork by Tony DeZuniga (pencils and inks) and vibrant coloring by Adrienne Roy, this 1987 issue features a striking cover by Tony DeZuniga.

The voyagers have made their way to China, where they dock at a port filled with dragon-prowed ships. Just as they arrive, though, a real dragon bursts from the water and begins laying waste to all around it. Arak manages to drive it off, but he ends up having to be rescued by his old "friend" Haakon, now the Byzantine ambassador! During trade negotiations, the very undiplomatic Haakon offers to kill the dragon, offending the Chinese authorities (and causing Haakon no little embarrassment). Later, Arak and Valda are accosted by an armed woman demanding to meet Arak, the "dragon-slayer."
