Aquaman #2
The cover of this New 52 second issue is a genuinely unsettling close-up of a massive deep-sea predator — all glassy, bulbous eyes and rows of jagged teeth — with Aquaman's reflection staring back from within those alien pupils, a beautifully unnerving way to suggest just how close the King of Atlantis is to something truly dangerous. Ivan Reis and Joe Prado's cover work gives the creature an almost tactile, bioluminescent menace that fits "The Trench, Part Two" perfectly. Writer Geoff Johns and his collaborators were clearly aiming to reestablish Aquaman as a hero who faces threats as vast and terrifying as the ocean itself.
