With a clever ruse involving baseball statistics as a fake code, Starman helps the group outwit their oppressors and rally for freedom, all while promising more aid from above. Written by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Lou Ferstadt, with a cover by Joe Gallagher, this story blends wartime heroism with a touch of wartime wit.
In a wartime mission brimming with urgency and secrecy, Chairman Hawkman rallies the team with a daring plan: deliver vital food to starving nations across Europe—without tipping off the Nazis. To do it, he’s devised tiny capsules that, when activated, transform into full meals, and each hero is tasked with carrying them to a different country.
In "Food for Starving Patriots! Chapter 1," Hawkman arrives in occupied France, where a wary resistance cell shares a meal and a troubling tale: their hero, known only as "The Sly One," has been captured. With the promise of more supplies hidden in a dud bomb marked with an "X," Hawkman joins the underground in a daring mission to rescue their comrade.
In "Food for Starving Patriots! Chapter 2," Starman journeys to Nazi-occupied Poland, where he encounters the defiant Bowman of Mons—initially wary of him, but quickly won over by a shared meal. Teaming up with the resistance, he devises a clever ruse, feeding the enemy a fake "secret code" made of baseball batting averages, all while planning to free the imprisoned and arm the fighters.
In "Food for Starving Patriots! Chapter 3," the Atom, disguised in Holland during wartime, slips past enemy lines to sabotage a German convoy—only to be captured and imprisoned. Escaping after transforming into his hero guise, he teams up with a young Dutch boy who shares a secret: hollowed-out artillery shells contain maps revealing hidden Nazi airfields. With the help of local resistance, they send the shells flying, hoping the R.A.F. will intercept and act.
In "Food for Starving Patriots! Chapter 4," Doctor Fate arrives unexpectedly at a concentration camp during a tense moment, his presence signaled by a cryptic tea leaf reading from Hitler. With quiet resolve, he secretly provides sustenance to the prisoners and teaches them a clever, unseen way to undermine their captors by tampering with their artillery—using sand to disrupt the gunpowder, turning their weapons against them from within.
In "Food for Starving Patriots! Chapter 5," Dr. Mid-Nite and his loyal companion Hooty journey to Norway, tracking down a resistance leader whose name they’ve uncovered. Once at his home, they’re met by a nervous young woman who claims the man is away—but Dr. Mid-Nite isn’t deterred, especially after sharing a meal with the local resistance. When the leader finally returns, he reveals a secret weapon designed to combat German submarines, and Dr. Mid-Nite joins forces with him to strike a critical blow against enemy supplies.
In "Food for Starving Patriots! Chapter 6," the Ghostly Guardian arrives in Nazi-occupied Belgium, where he rescues captured members of the underground, provides them with much-needed sustenance, and marks a trail to guide Allied bombers toward a hidden airplane hanger.
In "Food for Starving Patriots! Chapter 7," Johnny brings much-needed sustenance to the Czech underground, only to find himself in a tight spot when a German soldier spots him. With quick thinking and a little help from the Thunderbolt, he neutralizes the threat and uncovers a dangerous German plan—then handles it in a way that’s as unexpected as it is effective.
In "Food for Starving Patriots! Chapter 8," The Sandman and his young ally Sandy find themselves in Greece during World War II, where their presence sends ripples through enemy ranks—so much so that a German commander dreams of their arrival. As they infiltrate Nazi operations, the duo use deception to uncover secrets, all while preparing to strike at the heart of the enemy’s plans.
In "Food for Starving Patriots! Conclusion," the All-Star Comics team gathers to report in on their missions, but Johnny’s late—because he’s too busy to eat. When he finally grabs a handful of energy capsules meant to sustain the team, he swallows them all at once, leading to unexpected consequences.
