“The Case of the Cosmic Criminals! Part I”

In "The Case of the Cosmic Criminals! Part I," the Justice Society of America takes on a mystery that defies the laws of physics when the Rocky Castle Gang vanishes mid-chase—only to reappear with stolen plutonium-infused devices capable of cosmic power. With Dr. Egri’s lab as their first clue, the JSA splits up to track down the source of strange radiation waves across the country. Written by John Broome and illustrated by Irwin Hasen with inks by Bob Oksner, this 1949 adventure blends pulp intrigue with early science fiction, all capped by a cover by Hasen and Oksner that captures the eerie suspense of the unknown.

The Rocky Castle Gang is on the lam from the Police, who are in pursuit of the Gang's car when it just disappears without a trace! The JSA decides to investigate and comes upon an isolated cottage and hear cries for help. Entering, they discover a helpless Dr. Egri tied up in his lab, who explains his experiments with cosmic radiation. He explains the Rocky Castle Gang has stolen plutonium enriched items, which possess unlimited cosmic power. He's scared of the damage the gang can now inflict on mankind, so most of the JSA head out to four places where cosmic radiation has been strongest.
