“Hell Beyond”

A towering, golden-headed villain crackles with electric energy as he looms over a visibly weakened Superman, who slumps in a throne-like seat with sparks dancing around his head — it's a striking image of the Man of Steel pushed to his limits. The story title "Hell Beyond" promises something suitably dire, and the "Brain Dead!" cover blurb only heightens the tension on display. Dan Jurgens and Dennis Janke bring the interior to life, while Jerry Ordway's cover work sets an ominous tone for this March 1989 chapter of The Adventures of Superman.
