Randy DuBurke
Randy DuBurke (born 1962) is an American artist recognized for his work in both children’s literature and comic books. He is best known as the author and illustrator of the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award–winning picture book *The Moon Ring* (2003) and as the illustrator of *Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty* (2010), a graphic novel about gang violence in Chicago. Before these projects, DuBurke worked as a comic book artist during the 1980s and 1990s, contributing to titles such as *Action Comics Weekly*, *Green Arrow*, and *The Ray Annual*. His credits span 16 issues from 1988 to 2012, including work on *Hunter’s Heart* and *Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography*. DuBurke’s style blends clear, expressive linework with a restrained palette, often focusing on character-driven storytelling. His collaborators have included writers like G. Neri on *Yummy* and Andrew Helfer on the Malcolm X biography. Later in his career, DuBurke continued to balance independent graphic novels with commercial illustration. His legacy is marked by his ability to move between mainstream superhero comics and socially engaged, award-winning children’s books.
