“Perfumed Garden”

This DC Vertigo entry from November 1993 presents one of the more quietly unsettling covers in the Animal Man run, painted by Randy DuBurke — a young blonde figure rendered in warm reds and blues, glancing back uneasily while a pair of luminous animal eyes loom from the darkness behind them, with bare tree branches and faint animal silhouettes grounding the image in something primal and wild. The mood is atmospheric rather than action-driven, perfectly suited to the mature-readers label and the series' ongoing embrace of the strange and elemental. Written by Jamie Delano with art by Will Simpson, "Perfumed Garden" promises another thoughtful chapter in one of Vertigo's most adventurous titles.
