Kentaro Miura
1966–2021
Kentaro Miura was a Japanese manga artist best known for creating the dark fantasy epic *Berserk*, which he began serializing in 1989. He was born on July 11, 1966, in Japan, and died on May 6, 2021. Miura’s path into comics began early; he submitted his first work to a magazine while still in high school, and his early one-shots caught the attention of editors. His signature style combined painstakingly detailed linework with a grim, medieval-inspired aesthetic, often exploring themes of fate, ambition, and human struggle. Miura worked primarily as writer and artist on *Berserk*, with occasional collaborators for special projects. He also contributed to related art books and illustrated editions, including *Berserk Illustrations File* and the *Berserk Master Edition*. In 2002, he received the Award for Excellence at the sixth Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. After his passing, *Berserk* continued under the direction of his close friend and fellow manga artist Kouji Mori, with Miura’s former assistants handling the art. His work has left a lasting influence on dark fantasy in manga and beyond.
