Jonathan Lethem

Jonathan Lethem (born February 19, 1964, in New York City) is an American novelist and essayist best known for his genre-blending fiction, though his comic book work is limited to a single, notable run. He wrote 11 issues for Marvel from 2007 to 2008, all on *Omega: The Unknown*, a revival of the 1970s cult series. His path to comics came after establishing himself as a literary novelist; his first book, *Gun, with Occasional Music* (1994), fused science fiction and detective noir. He achieved mainstream acclaim with *Motherless Brooklyn* (1999), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the best-selling *The Fortress of Solitude* (2003). A MacArthur Fellow in 2005, Lethem brought his literary sensibility to comics, collaborating with artist Farel Dalrymple on *Omega: The Unknown* to update the story of a silent, superpowered boy and his alien guardian. The series was praised for its offbeat tone and emotional depth. Since 2011, he has taught creative writing at Pomona College, and in 2025 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction. Lethem’s brief but distinctive comics work remains a curious footnote in a career defined by boundary-crossing storytelling.
