The penultimate chapter of Jonathan Lethem and Farel Dalrymple's ten-issue limited series arrives with this unsettling image: a red-and-purple costumed hero bearing a bold "M" emblem is overwhelmed by a surging mob of robotic and human figures, their hands and mechanical limbs dragging him down as he cries out in anguish. Dalrymple's cover linework captures both the chaos of the crowd and the raw vulnerability of the figure at its center with striking economy. With only one issue left to go, this 2008 Marvel series is clearly hurtling toward something consequential.
