Jamie Hewlett
1968–
Jamie Christopher Hewlett was born on 3 April 1968 in the United Kingdom. He is best known as the co-creator of the punk-infused comic *Tank Girl*, which he launched with writer Alan Martin, and as the visual architect of the virtual band Gorillaz, a collaboration with musician Damon Albarn. Hewlett’s path into comics began in the late 1980s, when his distinctive, high-energy style—marked by bold linework, chaotic layouts, and a rebellious, punk aesthetic—found a home in the British anthology *Deadline*. There, *Tank Girl* became a cult sensation, leading to a film adaptation and a long-running series of comics and collected editions. Hewlett’s art often blends graffiti, caricature, and pop-art influences, and his key collaborators include Martin on *Tank Girl* and Albarn on Gorillaz, for which he designed the band’s animated members. His work on *Tank Girl* also includes the graphic novel *Tank Girl: The Odyssey*. Over a career spanning from 1988 to 2020, Hewlett has been credited as an artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on 46 issues. He has received multiple awards, including the 2006 Eisner Award for Best Publication for a Teenage Audience for *Tank Girl: The Gifting*. Hewlett’s legacy lies in his fusion of underground comics sensibilities with mainstream pop culture, influencing a generation of illustrators and animators.
