Hein de Kort
1956–
Hein de Kort, born 4 October 1956 in Laren, is a Dutch cartoonist best known for his long-running gag strip *Dirk & Desiree*, which he both wrote and drew. He entered the comics field in the early 1980s, contributing to *Veronica Magazine* and quickly establishing a signature style of clean, expressive linework paired with deadpan, often absurdist humor. His work frequently skewers domestic life, social conventions, and the quirks of everyday relationships. De Kort’s key collaborators have been few; he is primarily a solo creator, though his strips have been collected in albums such as *Pardon lul*, *Het jaar van Hein*, and the *Eikels* and *Eikeltjes* series. He is the co-creator of the long-running *Dirk & Desiree* feature, which ran for decades in Dutch newspapers. In 1992, he received the Stripschapprijs, the Netherlands’ most prestigious comics award, honoring his entire body of work. De Kort remained active through 2023, with credits on over 70 issues across his career. His legacy lies in his quietly subversive, character-driven humor, which has made him a staple of Dutch newspaper comics.
