George McManus
1884–1954
George McManus (January 23, 1884 – October 22, 1954) was an American cartoonist best known for creating the long-running comic strip *Bringing Up Father*, which chronicled the misadventures of Irish immigrant Jiggs and his social-climbing wife Maggie. Born in 1884, McManus began his career in the early 1900s, eventually finding his signature voice with this strip, which debuted in 1913. His clean, elegant linework and keen sense of visual comedy set his work apart, and he often collaborated with writers and inkers to maintain the strip's consistent quality. Over his career, he contributed to 145 issues across titles like *Fiinbeck og Fia*, *Gyllenbom*, and *Hjemmet*, with *Bringing Up Father* and its spin-offs, *Jiggs and Maggie*, becoming his most enduring creations. McManus's work earned him recognition as a pioneer of the comic strip medium, and his characters became cultural touchstones. He passed away in 1954, but his legacy endures through the continued reprinting of his strips and his influence on later cartoonists.
