Eddy Paape — born Edouard Paape on 3 July 1920 in Belgium and active across nearly seven decades of comics work — became one of the more versatile and quietly essential figures in the Franco-Belgian tradition. He died on 12 May 2012.

Paape's career, which stretched from 1953 well into the following century, saw him contribute as artist, colorist, inker, and letterer across 158 issues and a remarkable range of titles. His work appeared in celebrated publications including Robbedoes, Kuifje, and Tempo, among others, reflecting an adaptability that kept him relevant through successive generations of the medium.

He is best remembered for his illustrations on Luc Orient, a science fiction adventure series that showcased his clean, confident line work and his comfort with imaginative genre material. Additional titles such as Marc Dacier and Der Rote Korsar further demonstrated his range, from contemporary adventure to historical swashbuckling settings.

Over such a long and productive span, Paape helped shape the visual language of European adventure comics, contributing to publications that defined the form for millions of young readers. His steadiness as a craftsman — comfortable in multiple production roles rather than only the prestige position of lead artist — speaks to a professionalism that underpinned his lasting presence in the field.
