Who is Soun Tendo?

Soun Tendo is the widowed patriarch of the Tendo family and master of Anything-Goes Martial Arts in Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma ½. A lifelong friend of Genma Saotome, he eagerly upholds their old pact to unite their families through marriage.

Soun Tendo made his comics debut in 1993 as part of Rumiko Takahashi's beloved Ranma 1/2, brought to Western readers by Viz in what became one of the most celebrated manga translations of the Copper/Modern Age. A fixture across the series and its Part Six continuation, Soun shares his pages with a wonderfully chaotic household — including Akane, Nabiki, and Kasumi Tendo alongside the perpetually complicated Ranma Saotome and Genma Saotome. His consistent presence across a decade of publication speaks to how central he is to the warm, comedic heart of the story. For fans of Takahashi's signature blend of family drama and martial arts mayhem, Soun is essential company.
