Mattie Franklin
Mattie Franklin is a young woman who gained spider-powers after voluntarily taking part in the mystic Gathering of Five ritual in place of her father, J. Jonah Jameson's friend. She subsequently assumed the identity of Spider-Woman.
Debuting in the pages of The Spectacular Spider-Man #262 in 1998, Mattie Franklin is a Modern Age Marvel creation from the pen of John Byrne and pencils of Luke Ross — arriving at a genuinely turbulent, fascinating moment in Spider-Man mythology. Over nearly two decades she carved out her own corner of the Marvel Universe, appearing across Spider-Woman, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Contest of Champions II, sharing pages with heavy-hitters like Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and the enigmatic Madame Web. With a key issue to her name and 34 catalog appearances spanning 1998 to 2017, Mattie is one of those rewarding deep-cut characters whose story rewards the curious collector willing to dig into the rich, tangled web of late-'90s Marvel.
