Jared Stevens
Jared Stevens was a cynical mercenary who came into possession of the ancient artifacts of Doctor Fate — the Helm, Amulet, and Cloak of Nabu — but refused the mantle of sorcerer, instead reforging the relics into weapons and adopting a darker, street-level identity as Fate.
Emerging from DC's mid-nineties creative ferment, Jared Stevens made his debut in Guy Gardner: Warrior #22 in 1994, the handiwork of writer Beau Smith and artist Mitch Byrd. His story unfolded most prominently across Fate and The Darkstars, placing him in heady company — sharing pages with the likes of Alan Scott, Green Lantern, Darkstar, and even Clark Kent himself. Though his catalog footprint is modest, a presence stretching across nearly a quarter-century of DC publishing speaks to a character who quietly endured, a fascinating artifact of the Copper/Modern Age worth seeking out by anyone with a taste for the deeper corners of the DC universe.
