Guy Gardner: Warrior #22 marks the narrative turning point in which a ring-less, comatose Guy Gardner awakens and commits to the quest for the legendary Warrior Waters — the South American expedition that would ultimately transform him into the Vuldarian shapeshifter known simply as Warrior. The issue introduces Buck Wargo and his Monster Hunters ensemble (Joey Hong, Rita Muldoon, and the Silver Age revival Tiger-Man/Desmond Farr), characters who would anchor the series' supporting cast for its remaining run. It also delivers the debut of the villain Dementor, whose very first line is a deliberate riff on the 1979 film The Warriors — a pop-culture wink that set the tone for Beau Smith's genre-mashing approach to the title. As the opening chapter of the 'Marauders of the Nabba' arc, the issue pivots the entire series away from the Hal Jordan/Emerald Twilight fallout and toward a pulp-adventure idiom that would define Guy Gardner: Warrior's identity.

In "Marauders of the Nabba, Chapter I: Road of Terror," Guy Gardner—still reeling from a haunting dream of Dementor—wakes from his coma to find himself stripped of his powers. Determined to reclaim his strength, he joins Buck Wargo and his ragtag crew on a perilous quest for the legendary Waters of the Warriors. Their journey is abruptly cut short when a Nazi rider on a velociraptor crashes into their path. Written by Beau Smith and illustrated by Mitch Byrd, with Dan Davis on inks, Stu Chaifetz on colors, and Albert DeGuzman on letters, the cover by Mitch Byrd and Dan Davis captures the chaos of the moment.

Written by Beau Smith with pencils by Mitch Byrd, inks by Dan Davis, colors by Stuart Chaifetz, letters by Albert DeGuzman, and edited by Eddie Berganza, issue #22 arrives directly after the four-part 'Emerald Fallout' storyline (issues #18–21) in which the renegade Hal Jordan destroyed Guy's yellow power ring and left him unconscious. Smith has noted in interviews that the subsequent Vuldarian shapeshifting powers Guy acquires on this quest were editorially mandated to capitalize on the pop-culture phenomenon of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers — meaning this issue is the on-ramp to a direction Smith himself did not entirely choose. The issue also appears to contain or have been packaged alongside material featuring the broad roster of DC Universe characters listed in catalog indexes (including Zero Hour-era figures like Waverider, Fate, and Starman), consistent with DC's practice of embedding crossover preview inserts in its July 1994 titles during the Zero Hour buildup period.
