George McManus’s classic newspaper strip Bringing Up Father was collected into twenty-four comic albums by Cupples & Leon between 1919 and 1934, preserving the daily adventures of the bickering but lovable Jiggs and Maggie. McManus, the strip’s sole writer and artist, defined the era’s immigrant-aspirational comedy with his elegant Art Nouveau linework and sharp, affectionate satire of social climbing.
