X-Men: Forever #4
X-Men: Forever #4 is the narrative capstone of Kieron Gillen's entire Krakoan-era project, delivering the answer to a seventeen-year-old mystery: Hope Summers is canonically revealed as the biological daughter of the Phoenix Force, resolving a thread dangled since her debut in 2007's X-Men #205. The issue simultaneously dismantles the Krakoan resurrection infrastructure by stranding the Five — including Hope herself, who sacrifices her life to rebirth the Phoenix — in the White Hot Room, formally ending the era of mutant immortality that had defined the line since House of X. It also brings emotional closure to a long-running subplot by having Xavier's mental block on Destiny removed, restoring her suppressed love for Nightcrawler and setting the stage for the Mystique/Destiny/Nightcrawler family arc carried forward into X-Men: The Wedding Special.

Marvel's editorial decision to compress and accelerate the end of the Krakoan Age meant that Gillen's planned continuation of Immortal X-Men was restructured: rather than running as issues #19–22 of that ongoing series, those chapters were rebranded and published as the four-issue X-Men: Forever limited series under editor Jordan D. White. Gillen and artist Luca Maresca — previously paired on Children of the Vault — were effectively handed a compressed canvas to resolve plot threads Gillen had been seeding across roughly two years of Immortal X-Men, while simultaneously serving as a companion and expansion piece to Rise of the Powers of X. The creative team's conclusion to their run was later collected under the Immortal X-Men banner as Vol. 5: X-Men Forever (trade paperback, December 2024), acknowledging what the rebranding had obscured.
