X-Men: Forever #1
X-Men: Forever #1 serves as the formal conclusion to Kieron Gillen's multi-year Krakoan Age narrative, picking up directly where Immortal X-Men #18 left off and resolving plot threads seeded as far back as Immortal X-Men #1. Its opening flashback — expanding a cryptic scene from that debut issue — finally shows Destiny's first encounter with the Dominion called Enigma at the real-world premiere of Elgar's Enigma Variations in 1899, recontextualizing the entire Krakoan saga's underlying threat. The issue also marks the first appearance of the Crew of No-Place X, the covert team assembled by Charles Xavier to fight a god outside of time. Writer Kieron Gillen revealed in his newsletter that this issue was originally conceived as Immortal X-Men #19 and planned for a January 2024 release alongside Rise of the Powers of X #1; Marvel's editorial decision to accelerate the end of the Krakoan Age and retire the ongoing series forced Gillen to retool and expand the material into a new #1 issue, released in March 2024. The content was padded to roughly 30 pages — longer than a standard Immortal X-Men chapter would have been — and repositioned to serve as both a gap-filler for readers of the concurrent event titles and a standalone entry point, a dual purpose that generated some fan debate about the editorial logic. When collected in trade paperback, Marvel acknowledged the material's true identity by titling the volume Immortal X-Men Vol. 5: X-Men Forever.
