About this Issue

X-Manhunt Omega #1 is the capstone of the X-Manhunt crossover — the second major line-wide event of Marvel's From the Ashes era — and it accomplishes something few X-Men stories have managed cleanly: a voluntary, in-character retirement of Charles Xavier as a figure within the X-Men franchise. After more than six decades as the gravitational center of mutantkind's mythology, Xavier cedes the dream to his students, escapes Earth with a resurrected Lilandra Neramani aboard a Shi'ar vessel, and effectively hands the X-line to its next generation of leaders. The issue also functions as a direct narrative bridge into the cosmic sphere, with Xavier's story explicitly continuing in Jonathan Hickman's Imperial — signaling a deliberate editorial repositioning of the character from X-mentor to Marvel cosmic player, timed to align the comics universe with anticipated MCU integration.

History

X-Manhunt was announced in December 2024 by executive editor Tom Brevoort, who had taken over the X-Men editorial group from Jordan White as part of the From the Ashes relaunch announced at SXSW in March 2024. Brevoort noted publicly that the increased editorial seniority reflected the X-Men's growing importance to Marvel Studios. The crossover ran through seven tie-in chapters across Uncanny X-Men, NYX, Storm, X-Men, X-Factor, X-Force, and Exceptional X-Men before all threads converged in this double-sized 48-page one-shot. Co-writers Gail Simone (the ongoing Uncanny X-Men) and Murewa Ayodele (Storm) were paired to co-author the finale, with interior art divided among Gleb Melnikov, Enid Balám, and Federica Mancin, and colors by Brian Reber.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released March 26, 2025 (cover-dated May 2025); a 48-page one-shot serving as the finale of the X-Manhunt crossover, the second major event of Marvel's X-Men: From the Ashes era.
  • Written by Gail Simone and Murewa Ayodele; interior art by Gleb Melnikov, Enid Balám, and Federica Mancin; colors by Brian Reber; cover by Gleb Melnikov with Morry Hollowell; editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski.
  • Charles Xavier formally retires from the X-Men and departs Earth aboard a Shi'ar vessel with Lilandra Neramani — the first sustained on-page reunion for the couple since Lilandra's death in War of Kings #4 (2009), making this the effective 'first full appearance' of the resurrected Lilandra in the From the Ashes continuity.
  • In-issue story title is 'X-Manhunt Finale: Dreams End'; the issue ends with a direct sequel hook to Jonathan Hickman, Iban Coello, and Federico Vicentini's Imperial series, where Xavier and Lilandra's story continues.
  • Kid Omega (Quentin Quire) defeats Professor X mid-issue by deploying a quarantined Cassandra Nova thoughtform stored in his own mind — a notable character moment for Quire as a psychic of consequence.
  • Cyclops and Storm have a full optic-blast vs. weather-powers confrontation intense enough to shatter Cyclops's visor; Storm ultimately stops Cyclops's pursuit of Xavier, underscoring the fracture lines between the From the Ashes X-factions.
  • The climactic Iceland sequence at Reynisfjara sees Magik summon a massive stepping-disk demon, with John Wraith (Kestrel) operating a 'Storm god' construct on Sage's orders — bringing several characters from across all the tie-in books into physical proximity for the first time in the event.
  • The collected edition X-Manhunt trade paperback reprints the full crossover including this issue; the one-shot shipped with at least four variant covers (David Marquez, Edwin Galmon, Phil Noto connecting variant, Tony Daniel).
