What If...? #47

Mar 1993 · Marvel · 1.25 USD; 1.60 CAD; 0.85 GBP
“What If Magneto Took Over the United States?”

In *What If...? #47*, writer Kurt Busiek and artist Tod Smith explore a chilling alternate path where Magneto, emboldened by the deaths of Professor X, Cyclops, and Jean Grey, seizes control of the United States with a powerful mutant army. As Earth's heroes struggle to contain the uprising, the president’s desperate countermove unleashes a fleet of Sentinels—leading to a devastating endgame that reshapes the nation into a Sentinel-dominated police state. Cover by Tod Smith and Ian Akin captures the grim tension of a world gone dark, while Wolverine’s defiant stand sets the stage for a new X-Men.

With the world in chaos (thanks in part to the deaths of Professor X, Cyclops and Jean Grey at the hands of Cable last issue), Magneto unites a horde of mutants under his control and fights earth's heroes in his bid to take over the country. He wins, but the president activates an army of Sentinels as he is forced out of office. The Sentinels slowly take over and are finally able to destroy Magneto and his forces with a nuke. With the US now a Sentinel police state, Wolverine breaks a small group of mutants out of prison and reforms the X-Men.
