About this Issue

Web of Spider-Man #15 is the debut issue of Chance (Nicholas Powell), a high-tech mercenary whose unique gimmick — wagering his own fee against the odds of completing a job — gave Spider-Man's rogues gallery one of its more conceptually distinctive copper-age additions. The same issue also serves as the auditory first appearance of the Foreigner, a shadowy master assassin created by writer Peter David, whose voice-only cameo here seeded a major subplot that would grow across multiple Spider-Man titles throughout 1986 and beyond. That cross-title coordination, engineered through an informal creative handshake between David Michelinie and Peter David, illustrates the increasingly networked editorial approach Marvel applied to its Spider-Man line during this era. Both characters introduced here went on to appear in the 2024 Sony film Kraven the Hunter, giving the issue a small but real footprint in live-action adaptation history.

History

The issue was written by David Michelinie with interior art by penciller Mike Harris and inker Kyle Baker, and carried a cover by Mark Beachum. It was released on February 25, 1986, with a June 1986 cover date, during Michelinie's early tenure on the Web of Spider-Man title. The Foreigner's voice-only appearance in this issue was arranged by design: according to Marvel's own published account, Peter David called in a favor with Michelinie to plant a teaser for a villain David was developing for his concurrent run on Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man — an early example of deliberate cross-title world-building between two writers on the same Spider-Man franchise. An editorial revision also affected the finished pages: at least one interior page drawn by Harris and Baker was restructured before printing, with panels redistributed across pages 22 and 23 rather than appearing as originally laid out.

  • First auditory/voice-only appearance of the Foreigner, a master assassin and head of the elite 1400 Club, created by writer Peter David and designed to resemble actor Patrick McGoohan; his full visual debut came the following month in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #116 (July 1986).
