Convict Duval escapes a penal colony by taking on another man's identity and transferring his fingers to him (so the fingerprints will match). Living his new life in Paris, Duval learns that his adopted identity was a murderer who coated dead women with wax and sold them as storefront dummies. He continues this line of work (the fingers do it by themself), but gets punished by the ghosts of the dummies. Duval ends as his own wax puppet.
