John is pursuing the airship of Matai Shang when a lucky shot brings his flier down into the jungle nation of Kaol. He rescues a band of red men from being ambushed by Tarks and finds their leader is Thuvia's father. They quickly decide to join forces as Shang has both John's wife and Thuvan's daughter as captives. They meet with the Jeddik of Kaol who repairs John's flier so the men can pursue Shang to the north. As they attempt to fly over an icy mountain, a force takes control of John's flier and they crash.
