“Return of the Lion, Part 3: Sanctuary”

In "Return of the Lion, Part 3: Sanctuary," Mari finds herself in the peaceful shrine of St. Amica, tended to by the gentle Brother Tabo and his companion lion, Zaki—the same feline who stood guard over her unconscious body. As she begins to understand her powers without relying on her totem, the Justice League arrives in Zambesi, only to be ambushed in an Intergang bunker, with Superman and Black Canary brought down by deadly shurikens. Written by G. Willow Wilson and illustrated by Cafu, with colors by Santiago Arcas and letters by Rob Clark Jr., this 2009 issue features a cover by Joshua Middleton.

After passing out beneath the lion, Mari wakes up in the shrine of St. Amica, looked after by the kindly Brother Tabo and his lion friend Zaki, the same lion that stood over Mari earlier. All wandering animals here live in harmony together. After talking with Brother Tabo, Mari finds she doesn't need her totem to access her powers. The Justice League arrives in Zambesi and finds an Intergang storage bunker. Booby traps are set off and Superman and Black Canary are felled by poisonous shurikens.
