“The Killing of Moon Knight”
About this Issue

Vengeance of the Moon Knight #9 serves as both the series finale and the closing chapter of Jed MacKay's extended Moon Knight continuity that began with the 2021 series — resolving the central arc of Marc Spector's death, resurrection, and the Shroud's misguided usurpation of his mantle. The issue delivers on the theological tension at the heart of MacKay's run: Marc finds a loophole in Khonshu's demand for blood by temporarily killing Maximillian Coleridge and having Hunter's Moon revive him, a theological sleight-of-hand that reframes the entire series' meditation on sacrifice, servitude, and moral autonomy. Its closing scene at the Bar with No Name — where Marc hangs the Shroud's Moon Knight costume as a territorial warning to an assembled rogues gallery — functions as a declarative statement of Marc's restored status in the Marvel street-level underworld. The issue directly bridges to Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu the following month, making it a connective hinge in one of the most sustained single-author runs in Moon Knight's publishing history.

History

Vengeance of the Moon Knight (2024) was announced in September 2023 as a direct continuation of MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio's Moon Knight (2021) run, picking up after Marc Spector's death at the end of that series. Issue #9, the series finale, brought in guest artist Devmalya Pramanik — who had also handled art duties on issues #6 and #8 — while Cappuccio stepped back for this concluding chapter. The issue was part of the post-Blood Hunt fallout, as the crossover event had provided the narrative machinery for Marc's resurrection; MacKay used issues #8 and #9 together to settle the debts that resurrection incurred. The series ran a tight nine issues from January to September 2024, after which the same core creative team immediately relaunched under the new Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu banner.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Jed MacKay with interior art by Devmalya Pramanik, colors by Rachelle Rosenberg, and letters by Cory Petit; cover by Davide Paratore. Published September 11, 2024 (cover-dated November 2024).
  • Final issue of the nine-issue Vengeance of the Moon Knight (2024) limited series, which ran January–September 2024 and was a direct sequel to MacKay's Moon Knight (2021) run.
  • Resolves the series' central conflict: Marc Spector confronts Maximillian Coleridge (the Shroud), who had assumed the Moon Knight identity across the series. Marc temporarily stops Coleridge's heart to satisfy Khonshu's demand for his death, then has Hunter's Moon (Dr. Yehya Badr) revive him — fulfilling the letter of the god's command through a deliberate loophole.
  • Features a notable Bar with No Name sequence populated by cameos of a wide array of Marvel villains — including Vulture, Rhino, Sandman, Shocker, Mysterio, Spot, Looter, Bulldozer, and Piledriver — in which Marc hangs up the Shroud's Moon Knight costume as a public declaration of his return and the re-establishment of all prior underworld agreements.
  • Maximillian Coleridge / the Shroud is listed with a 'Death and Resurrection' appearance tag, marking the narrative resolution of his arc as the false Moon Knight across the series.
  • Khonshu, Hunter's Moon (Dr. Yehya Badr), and Reese Williams all appear in supporting roles, with the Midnight Mission itself serving as a key location and thematic anchor.
  • The issue carries a back-matter preview of Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #1 (October 2024), signaling the immediate narrative continuation with the same creative team.
  • The series as a whole is confirmed to have been collected in trade paperback, and Marvel Database records one reprint of this specific issue.
