About this Issue

Ultimate Spider-Man #18 is a pivotal chapter in Jonathan Hickman's boldly reconceived Earth-6160 continuity, reuniting an older, married Peter Parker with his city and his best friend Harry Osborn after months of enforced exile — and delivering, at long last, the kinetic Spider-Man action the series had been building toward. The issue deepens the multi-front Sinister Six turf war while pulling the Parker family into its center in a genuinely alarming way: Richard Parker, still wearing the black picotech suit that the series has been coding as Venom since issue #1, walks straight into a Kingpin trap, making him the story's most endangered hostage. That cliffhanger directly triggers Richard's first full transformation into Venom in the following issue, making #18 the narrative setup for one of the run's biggest payoffs. It also marks the first appearance of an unnamed fifth member of the Mysterio Conglomerate, adding another layer to Hickman's intricately constructed secret-society subplot.

History

The 2024 Ultimate Spider-Man series was launched as the flagship ongoing of Marvel's second Ultimate Universe imprint, set on Earth-6160 — a timeline in which the Maker (an evil Reed Richards) rewrote history to suppress the emergence of superheroes. Jonathan Hickman, whose previous Marvel work included the House of X/Powers of X mutant relaunch, conceived the series with the explicit inspiration of the older, married Peter Parker seen in the Spider-Verse films. Marco Checchetto, a veteran of Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Punisher, served as the principal series artist; issue #18 marked his return to art duties after a fill-in arc, a fact reviewers noted prominently upon the issue's June 25, 2025 release.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published June 25, 2025 (cover-dated August 2025); written by Jonathan Hickman, with art and covers by Marco Checchetto, colors by Erick Arciniega, and letters by VC's Cory Petit.
  • Features the first appearance of an unnamed fifth member of the Mysterio Conglomerate, expanding the secret society whose known roster includes Quentin Beck, Gwen Stacy-Osborn, James Wesley, and Robbie Robertson.
  • Richard Parker (son of Peter), wearing the black picotech 'Venom' suit, is lured to New York by a faked distress text from Felicia Hardy/Black Cat and is ambushed by Kingpin, Walter Hardy, and the Bullseyes — the cliffhanger that directly triggers his first full Venom transformation in the subsequent issue (#19).
  • Spider-Man and Green Goblin (Harry Osborn) patrol New York together in a double-page action montage — their first shared crime-fighting sequence since Peter's return from Utah — facing Shocker, Hammerhead, and Vermin.
  • Otto Octavius appears in a comedic scene having moved into Peter's vacant apartment and installed security upgrades while the Parkers were in hiding, providing levity within an otherwise escalating thriller plot.
  • The Mysterio Conglomerate convenes to debate the political fallout from Gwen Stacy and Harry's attack on Mister Negative's bomb factory, reinforcing Gwen's growing autonomous authority within the group — a role she inherited from her late father, George Stacy.
  • The issue sits within the series' third act: following Peter's escape from Kraven's captivity (issues #13–16) and the family's exile in Utah, this chapter marks the full return to New York and the escalation toward the series' endgame (which Hickman confirmed at SDCC 2025 was always planned to conclude at issue #24).
  • Variant covers for this issue include a 1:25 Terry Dodson incentive variant, an Iban Coello variant, and a Gerardo Sandoval 'Ultimate Special' variant.
