About this Issue

Ultimate Spider-Man #17 is the pivotal payoff issue following the bombshell revelations of issue #16, deploying the newly unmasked Mysterio collective — Gwen Stacy, Robbie Robertson, and James Wesley — as active players in an escalating war against Kingpin's Sinister Six, a radical reinvention that transforms three supporting-cast stalwarts into covert resistance fighters operating in the shadow of the Maker's rewritten history. The issue crystallizes Jonathan Hickman's most audacious structural gamble in the series: sidelining Peter Parker almost entirely so that Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy-Osborn can carry the narrative, establishing the Green Goblin and Mysterio as the offensive vanguard of the heroes' counterattack. By confirming that both Robbie Robertson — longtime Daily Bugle fixture — and Wilson Fisk's own aide James Wesley secretly wear the Mysterio mantle, Hickman expands the scope of the series' underground resistance into the very heart of the villain's power structure. This issue also marks the first time Harry Osborn, having faked his own death, re-dons the Goblin armor on a declared war footing alongside his wife-as-Mysterio, making it a narrative turning point for both characters in the Earth-6160 continuity.

History

This issue is part of the third volume of Ultimate Spider-Man, an ongoing series launched in January 2024 and written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Marco Checchetto, set in the newly established Ultimate Universe imprint on Earth-6160. Hickman has stated the series was inspired in part by the older, family-man version of Peter Parker depicted in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and the entire 24-issue run was planned from the start as a complete story — a fact Hickman confirmed publicly at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, noting the series never deviated from his original pitch. For issue #17 specifically, interior art duties were handled by David Messina with colors by Matt Wilson, while series regular Checchetto provided the main cover; the issue shipped May 28, 2025, and demand prompted a second printing with a Peach Momoko cover variant.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published May 28, 2025 by Marvel Comics; written by Jonathan Hickman, interior art by David Messina, colors by Matt Wilson, letters by VC's Cory Petit, main cover by Marco Checchetto and Matt Wilson.
  • First issue to actively deploy the full Mysterio collective as combatants: Gwen Stacy wields the Mysterio amulet for one week, teaming with Harry Osborn as Green Goblin to raid and destroy a Mister Negative Demons weapons factory.
  • In-issue reveal of Robbie Robertson as a secret member of the Mysterio collective — one of the most significant supporting-character recontextualizations in the series — confirmed when he meets Gwen at Oscorp headquarters.
  • In-issue reveal of James Wesley (Kingpin's personal assistant) as a Mysterio member, disclosed privately to Gwen after Wilson Fisk exits the room; Wesley also confirms he helped conceal Harry's survival from Kingpin.
  • Harry Osborn, presumed publicly dead since issue #16's faked death gambit, secretly visits Otto Octavius to have his Green Goblin armor serviced and upgraded, re-emerging as a fully operational vigilante; the Norman Osborn A.I. urges Harry not to shame the family name.
  • The issue ends with Harry calling Peter Parker to reveal he is alive and ordering him to return from his family road-trip exile so they can move to the next phase of their plan against Kingpin.
  • The issue received a second printing with a Peach Momoko cover variant (FOC June 16, 2025; release July 16, 2025), reflecting retailer reorder demand.
  • The series is set in Earth-6160 — the new Ultimate Universe imprint — and is the first ongoing series from that imprint; the 24-issue run was always planned as a complete arc, with Hickman confirming at SDCC 2025 that issue #24 would be the conclusion.
