Ultimate Fallout #4
Ultimate Fallout #4 stands as one of the most consequential single issues of the twenty-first century because it contains the first appearance of Miles Morales — an Afro-Latino teenager who took up the Spider-Man mantle in the Ultimate Universe following the death of Peter Parker, becoming the first Black Spider-Man in Marvel's history and one of the most culturally resonant superhero creations of the modern era. The issue simultaneously introduced the villainous identity of the Maker, the Ultimate Universe's Reed Richards turned supervillain, seeding a character who would become a major antagonist across multiple Marvel imprints for over a decade. Miles's debut generated immediate mainstream media coverage and sparked a wide national conversation about diversity, representation, and the legacy of superhero icons, demonstrating that a comic book debut could carry genuine cultural weight well beyond the direct market. His subsequent graduation from the Ultimate imprint into the main Marvel Universe, and his starring role in the Academy Award-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, confirmed that this single issue launched one of Marvel's most enduring and beloved characters.
"Ultimate Fallout Chapter Four of Six" brings the high-stakes saga to a pivotal moment, with Captain America’s fate hanging in the balance and the X-Men’s disappearance deepening the mystery. As the new Spider-Man suit raises more questions than answers, Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer, and Brian Michael Bendis deliver a gripping chapter illustrated by Salvador Larroca, Clayton Crain, and Sara Pichelli, with dynamic inking and coloring by the team. The cover by Mark Bagley and Andy Lanning captures the tension of a universe on the edge.

The seeds of Miles Morales were planted as early as 2008, when the prospect of Barack Obama's election as the first African-American president prompted then-editor-in-chief Axel Alonso and writer Brian Michael Bendis — who had helmed Ultimate Spider-Man since its 2000 launch — to discuss reimagining the Spider-Man mantle with a character who reflected contemporary America. Bendis later credited Donald Glover's appearance in Spider-Man pajamas in a 2010 episode of the television series Community as a concrete visual inspiration for the character. The opportunity to act on those ideas arrived when Marvel decided to kill the Ultimate Peter Parker in the 'Death of Spider-Man' storyline, and Bendis, working with artist Sara Pichelli and with direct editorial input from Alonso, developed Miles Morales as his successor; the character's debut in issue #4 was kept out of promotional materials so that readers would encounter him as a genuine surprise. The issue was structured as three distinct anthology segments — Bendis writing the Miles section with Pichelli on art, Jonathan Hickman scripting the Reed Richards/Maker segment with Salvador Larroca, and Nick Spencer providing a third story illustrated by Clayton Crain — with cover art by Mark Bagley.
