During the D-Day invasion in June of 1944, one Pvt. Smith, often considered by his sergeant to be a coward, engaged himself in many battles during the campaign, including a battle in which he held off the Germans while the sergeant was supposed to blow a bridge over which the enemy would attack. A Tiger tank, able to cross the bridge because it was not destroyed, killed the young private while the sergeant became a victim of battle fatigue and didn't complete his mission.
