Two-Fisted Tales #19
"War Story!" in Two-Fisted Tales #19 (1951) delivers a taut, Cold War-era thriller from the mind of Harvey Kurtzman, whose sharp, expressive cover art sets the tone before you even open the issue. The story follows an International Press Service employee racing to escape across the Iron Curtain, only to find himself outmaneuvered by a seemingly helpless girl who’s actually a decoy—though his quick thinking and fight for freedom may just turn the tide. With stark, dynamic visuals and a pulse-pounding narrative, this issue stands as a powerful example of EC’s bold storytelling in its early years.

An International Press Service employee, well aware that the U.N. police were on his trail to return him to behind the iron curtain, breathed a sigh of relief as he saw a girl being wrestled to the ground by the police that were chasing him. All he needed was 3 more hours and he would be safe from their clutches. Unfortunately, the girl proved to be a paid decoy to lure him from the safety of the train, and she succeeded in conking him over the head. But the police never reached him because he was able to fight off three assailants and make good his escape.
