TVA #4 is the dramatic pivot of the five-issue limited series that deliberately fused the comic-book and MCU iterations of the Time Variance Authority for the first time, a project announced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. The issue delivers the series' central revelation — that Nightmare, not the ghost of Loki, has been orchestrating 'the Madness' afflicting timelines across the multiverse, using Ghost-Spider as an unwitting pawn to free Scarlet Witch. As the penultimate chapter of a miniseries that brought MCU-born characters such as Miss Minutes, Hunter B-15, Mobius M. Mobius, Ouroboros, and Sylvie into full Marvel Comics continuity alongside displaced comics characters like Gambit, Captain Carter, Jimmy Hudson, and Ghost-Spider, the issue consolidates one of the more ambitious cross-media storytelling experiments Marvel undertook in the mid-2020s.

History

The TVA series was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 and written by Katharyn Blair, a writer on Loki Season Two, with art by Pere Pérez; each issue also carried a backup story written by Ryan North with art by Enid Balám. Blair framed the project as her 'comics interpretation' of the TVA in the aftermath of Loki's sacrifice at the end of Season Two, deliberately blending the comics' long-standing bureaucratic TVA — itself originating in Thor #372 (1986) and created by Walt Simonson and Sal Buscema — with the MCU's version seen in Loki and Deadpool & Wolverine. Jordan D. White edited the main story throughout the run, with C.B. Cebulski serving as Editor-in-Chief.

Nightmare is confirmed as the primary antagonist of the series' central 'Madness' arc, revealed to have been manipulating timelines by masquerading as a 'green one' — leading characters and readers alike to assume it was Loki.
Ghost-Spider (Gwen Stacy of Earth-65) is manipulated by Nightmare into triggering Scarlet Witch's release, a plot beat that Nightmare had calculated around her trust and naivety.
The issue features a variant cover by Zulema Scotto Lavina in addition to the standard Pere Pérez cover.
Doc Clock and Sir Seconds — two original sentient AI clock characters created for this series and introduced earlier in the run — appear as part of the TVA's support staff; along with Miss Minutes, they form a trio of cartoon-clock AI mascots unique to this series.
The series as a whole marked the Marvel Comics debut of MCU characters including Miss Minutes, Ouroboros (O.B.), and the MCU-derived versions of Hunter B-15, Mobius M. Mobius, and Sylvie.
TVA ran for five issues (December 2024 – April 2025) and was subsequently collected in the trade paperback TVA: For All Time, Always.
