“The Whitewash”

In "The Whitewash," Robert Morales and Kyle Baker delve into the haunting legacy of Isaiah Bradley, as Captain America and Agent Spinrad confront Merritt—a convicted man now consumed by rage—over a tattered Captain America uniform. Flashbacks reveal Bradley’s ordeal under Nazi captivity, where even Hitler’s regime, despite its racism, attempted to exploit his strength, only to be thwarted by his unyielding spirit. The story unfolds with quiet power, weaving personal history with the weight of forgotten truth, all rendered in Baker’s striking, evocative art.

Spinrad and Captain America question Merritt (now a convict and an aggressive hatemonger) as to how he acquired a tattered Captain America uniform. Merritt reveals that it was Isaiah Bradley's. Flashbacks show that Hitler and cohorts, while despising Bradley for being of African descent, tried vainly to recruit Bradley to their cause. Spinrad tells Captain America about Bradley's story, adding that his own grandfather, in a German resistance group, helped free him from captivity.
