“The Last Traitor!”

Dracula lunges forward in full fury on Gene Colan and Tom Palmer's cover for this August 1977 installment — cape billowing, fangs bared, clawed hands outstretched toward a figure in a magenta cloak who clutches what appears to be a crossbow or similar weapon. A woman in yellow looks on from the background as a speech bubble makes the Lord of Vampires' rage unmistakably clear: "You killed my son Janus, human fool… now Dracula must slay you!" Titled "The Last Traitor!," this issue promises high personal stakes for the Prince of Darkness, and Colan's dynamic, swooping composition — a hallmark of this series in the mid-1970s — makes it easy to see why Tomb of Dracula earned its "Comicdom's Number One Fear Magazine" badge.
