Although Sun appears here only as a voice heard offstage — his physical form revealed in subsequent issues — the brief Ireland-set subplot establishes his operation, his agent Mr. Chen, and his control over the vampire Lucas Brand, quietly setting the stage for confrontations that would run through issue #42 and beyond, eventually crossing over into Nova and Fantastic Four. The main story, 'Return from the Grave!', is equally notable for casting Dracula as an unlikely co-investigator alongside Scotland Yard's Inspector Chelm in a self-contained gothic mystery, a structural choice that demonstrated Wolfman's willingness to push the series beyond vampire-versus-hunter formula and let its protagonist inhabit morally complex, almost sympathetic territory.

By issue #16, the creative backbone of the series was fully locked in: writer Marv Wolfman had taken over the scripting duties with issue #7, and by his own account finally understood what the book needed to be after the story arc in issues #12–14. The entire interior of this issue was penciled by Gene Colan — who had actively lobbied to land the assignment — inked and colored by Tom Palmer, lettered by Artie Simek, and edited by Roy Thomas, with Len Wein serving as editor-in-chief. The cover was drawn by Gil Kane, who handled many Marvel covers during this period. The issue carried a January 1974 cover date and was on sale from October 1973.
