ThunderCats #22
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThunderCats #22 delivers one of the most consequential lore drops in Dynamite's ongoing series by formally introducing the Grey Cats — a secret black-ops unit that operated in Thundera's shadows long before the events of the main narrative. The reveal recontextualizes the origins of key characters, explaining how Calica came to be groomed as a Thundercat operative after being rescued as a child, and why her loyalty to Jaga runs so deep. Crucially, it also marks the in-narrative return of Jaga, believed dead since the series' opening arc, which forces Lion-O and the entire team to interrogate the hidden history of their own society. In doing so, the issue expands the ThunderCats mythology well beyond its Rankin/Bass animated roots, demonstrating that Shalvey's run has built a serialized, continuity-dense universe capable of genuine long-game storytelling.

Dynamite Entertainment announced its ThunderCats revival at New York Comic Con 2023, with writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss — both self-described fans of the original cartoon — named as the core creative team alongside letterer Jeff Eckleberry. The series launched in February 2024 under editor Nate Cosby, framed from the start as a science-fiction-forward reboot that would mine the franchise's mythology for new character depth. By issue #22, the series had grown into a multi-title publishing line that included spin-offs (ThunderCats: Cheetara, ThunderCats: Lost) and one-shots, reflecting strong ongoing support from Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, who hold the ThunderCats IP.
