About this Issue

ThunderCats #23 functions as the critical narrative hinge that quietly seeds the franchise-expanding ThunderCats x SilverHawks crossover event: Panthro's satellite mission returns with intelligence about a deep-space station connected to the SilverHawks, effectively folding two separate 1980s animated properties into a single shared universe for the first time in comics. Simultaneously, Lion-O's ongoing struggle to unlock the Book of Omens reaches a breakthrough moment that pays off threads running through the entire Shalvey-Moss run. Coming just two issues before writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss concluded their tenure on the main series with #25, the issue reads as both a culmination of long-building subplots and an on-ramp to a far larger crossover story.

History

The Dynamite ThunderCats series was announced at New York Comic Con in October 2023, with writer Declan Shalvey, artist Drew Moss, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry named as the core creative team from the outset. Editor Nate Cosby oversaw the line as it expanded into spin-offs and crossovers, and by the time issue #23 shipped on January 28, 2026, Shalvey had already been publicly teasing the SilverHawks crossover for over a year, deliberately planting connective tissue — including Panthro's satellite mission — in the preceding story arc.

  • The issue directly sets up the 15-part ThunderCats x SilverHawks crossover event that was announced January 23, 2026 — just five days before the issue shipped — and which kicked off with ThunderCats x SilverHawks: Road to War #1 on April 1, 2026.
  • Issue #23 is the penultimate-but-two chapter of Shalvey and Moss's overall run; they concluded their work on the main title with issue #25 (on sale March 25, 2026).
  • The series is part of Dynamite's expanding 'ThunderVerse,' which by early 2026 also encompassed ThunderCats: Cheetara, ThunderCats: Lost, ThunderCats/Powerpuff Girls, and the SilverHawks ongoing.
