About this Issue

ThunderCats #12 is the narrative payoff to one of the central mysteries of Dynamite's acclaimed 2024 relaunch: the true allegiance and backstory of Calica, the first all-new Thunderian character added to the core franchise canon in this series. Introduced in ThunderCats #2 as a morally ambiguous figure discovered in Mu'Tant wreckage, Calica became the series' most discussed original creation, and issue #12 is the chapter where her apparent betrayal — stealing the Eye of Thundera from the Sword of Omens — is finally given context and resolution. As the opening chapter of the series' second year of publication, it also functions as a soft relaunch point, reorienting the book's multiple plot threads for readers and signaling Declan Shalvey's ambitions for the run's next phase. Within the broader history of ThunderCats comics — stretching from Marvel's Star Comics imprint in 1985 through Wildstorm's DC-published run in the early 2000s — this issue represents the deepest piece of original mythology-building in the franchise's comics history.

History

Dynamite Entertainment announced this ThunderCats series at New York Comic Con in October 2023, part of a newly struck partnership between Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products. Writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss — both self-described fans of the original Rankin-Bass animated series — were brought together by editor Nate Cosby, with Shalvey having previously drawn a variant cover for Moss's creator-owned book Copperhead years earlier. The series launched in February 2024 with a mandate to explore the ThunderCats' earliest days on Third Earth, leaning into the science fiction underpinnings of the original show while introducing new lore; the coloring across the run is credited to Arancia Studio, with Jeff Eckleberry on letters. Issue #12, shipping in January 2025, was produced by the same core creative team and arrived the same week Dynamite launched its companion SilverHawks series, positioning it as the anchor of an expanding 'ThunderVerse' line.
