Charlie Adlard's cover for issue #52 puts young Carl front and center — wide-eyed beneath his oversized sheriff's hat, visibly shaken, with a purple undead arm and blade cutting across the frame in a genuinely unsettling intrusion of danger. It's a striking image that captures the series' core tension: a child navigating an utterly merciless world. Robert Kirkman, Adlard, and Cliff Rathburn were delivering some of the most quietly harrowing survival storytelling in comics in 2008, and this cover is a compelling reminder of why.
