Against a dim, foreboding backdrop of silhouetted walkers, this 2007 Image Comics issue presents a quietly devastating image: a bearded man with bandaged, bloodied wrists holds a visibly pregnant woman close, both of them tight-eyed with grief or exhaustion. Charlie Adlard's cover strips away the action-horror trappings to focus on raw human vulnerability — two people clinging to each other amid an encroaching darkness. Robert Kirkman and Adlard continue to demonstrate that The Walking Dead is as much about the weight of surviving as it is about the dead themselves.
