The Whisperer War reaches its midpoint with issue #159, and Charlie Adlard's cover makes the stakes viscerally clear: the scarred, imposing face of Alpha looms large above the battlefield, while a grim, zombie-masked figure advances in the foreground and a heavily armed column of survivors marches forward behind them. Two worlds — the Whisperers and the living — are on a collision course, rendered here in a striking palette of blood red, cold grey, and battlefield green. Robert Kirkman and Adlard, with inks by Stefano Gaudiano and tones by Cliff Rathburn, were firing on all cylinders during this arc, and this cover alone captures the dread of a war with no clean outcome in sight.
