In "Go Tell the Spartans," the X-Men and the Freedom Force find themselves locked in a tense standoff, each holding the other's members captive—until the Adversary's chaos wave begins to unravel Dallas. With Storm and Forge returning from the Adversary's realm, Forge works to restore Storm's powers as the two teams are forced to set aside their differences and join forces. Written by Chris Claremont and illustrated with striking intensity by Marc Silvestri, with inks by Dan Green and colors by Oliver and Bill Wray, this pivotal issue sees the cover by Marc Silvestri and Dan Green capturing the moment of uneasy alliance.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published February 1988 by Marvel Comics; written by Chris Claremont, pencilled by Marc Silvestri, inked by Dan Green, colored by Glynis Oliver and Bill Wray, lettered by Tom Orzechowski.
  • Story title: 'Go Tell the Spartans!' — Part 2 of 3 of the Uncanny X-Men's contribution to the 'Fall of the Mutants' crossover event (Uncanny X-Men #225–227).
  • Storm regains her weather-manipulation powers in this issue via a device built by Forge — restoring abilities she had lost in Uncanny X-Men #185 (1984), a gap of nearly four years of publication.
  • The X-Men and Freedom Force — longtime enemies — are forced into a temporary alliance to combat the Adversary's reality-tearing chaos wave engulfing Dallas, with the battle broadcast live on television by reporters Neal Conan and Manoli Wetherell.
  • Spiral uses magic to fuse Destiny's mask to Dazzler's face (held on by a blade), blinding Dazzler for the remainder of the arc — one of several Claremont character-specific power interactions woven through the issue.
  • The Adversary is revealed to have been disguised as an ordinary state trooper throughout the issue, dropping the deception only upon sensing Storm and Forge's return to Earth.
  • Fall of the Mutants was structured as three separate, non-intersecting storylines across Uncanny X-Men #225–227, X-Factor #24–26, and New Mutants #59–61, each self-contained and readable independently — an unusual crossover architecture for the era.
  • The issue is collected in the X-Men: Fall of the Mutants Vol. 1 trade paperback (collecting Uncanny X-Men #220–227, New Mutants #55–61, and Incredible Hulk #340); the broader storyline also inspired the 1990 DOS video game X-Men II: The Fall of the Mutants.
