History

The series was conceived by editor Tom DeFalco, who assembled the New Warriors team from a collection of existing but underutilized Marvel characters — Firestar, Marvel Boy, Namorita, Nova, and Speedball — alongside the original creation Night Thrasher, then handed ongoing scripting duties to Fabian Nicieza with Mark Bagley on pencils and Al Williamson on inks. Issue #2, titled 'Mirror Moves' and cover-dated August 1990, arrived directly on the heels of the debut issue and was part of Nicieza's deliberate strategy of immediately deepening Night Thrasher's mysterious past rather than deferring it — a technique characteristic of the early-'90s Marvel approach of seeding long-form backstory from the very first arc. The creative team of Nicieza and Bagley would remain the book's defining partnership for its first 53 issues, establishing a house style of gritty urban action balanced with ensemble character work.
