The issue was produced by the regular creative team of writer Marv Wolfman and penciler George Pérez (on plot), with Pérez providing breakdowns and Romeo Tanghal finishing the art, Adrienne Roy on colors, Ben Oda on letters, and Len Wein as editor. It sits eight issues into the volume-one launch that began in November 1980, by which point the series had already proven itself a commercial force — the letters column in this very issue remarks on the extraordinary volume of reader mail the book was receiving. The 'day in the life' format gave Wolfman and Pérez room to plant supporting-cast relationships (Terry Long, Sarah Simms, Vernon Questor, Marcy Reynolds) that would pay off across the following years of stories, and the Puppeteer thread works as a slow-burn setup for the villain's full appearance in issue #9.
